Facets and Typed Relations as Tools for Reasoning Processes in Information Retrieval
Faceted arrangement of entities and typed relations for representing
different associations between the entities are established tools in knowledge
representation. In this paper, a proposal is being discussed combining both
tools to draw inferences along relational paths. This approach may yield new
benefit for information retrieval processes, especially when modeled for
heterogeneous environments in the Semantic Web. Faceted arrangement can be used
as a se-lection tool for the semantic knowledge modeled within the knowledge
repre-sentation. Typed relations between the entities of different facets can
be used as restrictions for selecting them across the facets
Interview with Tony Buxton by Andrea L’Hommedieu
Biographical NoteAnthony “Tony” Wayne Buxton was born in Augusta, Maine, on December 19, 1946, and grew up in Readfield, Maine. His father, Wayne Wilson Buxton, an artist and writer, and his mother, Margaret (Murray) Buxton, an artist and teacher, both came from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tony attended Bowdoin College, being graduated in 1968, then served in the Army from 1968-1970. He received his law degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1978 and began working for the firm Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios in 1980. He co-founded the Energy Law Institute. Tony has served on both the Democratic State Committee and the Democratic Party as treasurer and chair. He was heavily involved in several of George Mitchell\u27s political campaigns in 1974, 1982, and 1988.

The use of RGB Imaging and FTIR Sensors for mineral mapping in the Reiche Zeche underground test mine, Freiberg
The application of sensor technologies for raw material characterization is rapidly growing, and innovative advancement of the technologies is observed. Sensors are being used as laboratory and in-situ techniques for characterization and definition of raw material properties. However, application of sensor technologies for underground mining resource extraction is very limited and highly dependent on the geological and operational environment. In this study the potential of RGB imaging and FTIR spectroscopy for the characterization of polymetallic sulphide minerals in a test case of Freiberg mine was investigated. A defined imaging procedure was used to acquire RGB images. The images were georeferenced, mosaicked and a mineral map was produced using a supervised image classification technique. Five mineral types have been identified and the overall classification accuracy shows the potential of the technique for the delineation of sulphide ores in an underground mine. FTIR data in combination with chemometric techniques were evaluated for discrimination of the test case materials. Experimental design was implemented in order to identify optimal pre-processing strategies. Using the processed data, PLS-DA classification models were developed to assess the capability of the model to discriminate the three material types. The acquired calibration and prediction statistics show the approach is efficient and provides acceptable classification success. In addition, important variables (wavelength location) responsible for the discrimination of the three materials type were identified
Pool boiling on modified surfaces using R-123
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Saturated pool boiling of R-123 was investigated for five horizontal copper surfaces modified by different treatments, namely, an emery-polished surface, a fine sandblasted surface, a rough sandblasted surface, an electron beam-enhanced surface, and a sintered surface. Each 40-mm-diameter heating surface formed the upper face of an oxygen-free copper block, electrically heated by embedded cartridge heaters. The experiments were performed from the natural convection regime through nucleate boiling up to the critical heat flux, with both increasing and decreasing heat flux, at 1.01 bar, and additionally at 2 bar and 4 bar for the emery-polished surface. Significant enhancement of heat transfer with increasing surface modification was demonstrated, particularly for the electron beam-enhanced and sintered surfaces. The emery-polished and sandblasted surface results are compared with nucleate boiling correlations and other published data. © 2014 Syed W. Ahmad, John S. Lewis, Ryan J. McGlen, and Tassos G. Spatial audio in small display screen devices
Our work addresses the problem of (visual) clutter in mobile device interfaces. The solution we propose involves the translation of technique-from the graphical to the audio domain-for expliting space in information representation. This article presents an illustrative example in the form of a spatialisedaudio progress bar. In usability tests, participants performed background monitoring tasks significantly more accurately using this spatialised audio (a compared with a conventional visual) progress bar. Moreover, their performance in a simultaneously running, visually demanding foreground task was significantly improved in the eye-free monitoring condition. These results have important implications for the design of multi-tasking interfaces for mobile devices
